Why Students Struggle with Measures of Center and Spread
Each year, teaching statistics starts off pretty much the same way. I always ask my students, “What can you tell me about mean, median, and mode?”
The typical response is usually silence for about 30 seconds until someone finally says, “Isn’t mean just the average?”
At that point, you’d think success is just around the corner, but alas, it is not.
Median is a word that seems to escape the vocabulary of most high school students. Even those old enough to know that a median is in the center of the road somehow struggle to relate that idea to the statistical median. And mode? Most students can recite a definition, but ask them when or why you would use it, and they’re completely stumped.
The problem with statistics is that students often learn mean, median, and mode in late middle school as procedures to memorize. They learn a formula and a set of steps to follow, but the concepts behind each measure and their purpose remain completely foreign to them.
As high school teachers, we know that statistics is much more than finding an average. It’s about using data to make decisions and tell a story.
That’s why I spend time not only reviewing (or in some cases teaching) the calculations involved, but also applying them to real situations. Students need to understand which measure to use, when to use it, and why one statistic might be more appropriate than another.
Outliers play a huge role in helping students make these decisions.
Most students intuitively understand that an outlier is a piece of data that doesn’t seem to fit with the rest of the data set. However, they often assume something is an outlier simply because it looks different. They need opportunities to determine mathematically whether a value is truly an outlier and, more importantly, to see how that outlier affects measures like the mean and standard deviation.
One of my favorite moments while teaching this unit is when students begin connecting the spread of a data set to consistency.
Suddenly, a small standard deviation no longer represents some random number their calculator spits out. Instead, it means that battery life is reliable, delivery times are predictable, or a basketball player performs consistently from game to game.
That connection is often an aha moment for students.
When statistics becomes more than formulas and procedures, students begin to see why these measures matter. They realize that the numbers actually tell a story, and that story can help them make informed decisions about the world around them.
If your students struggle to move beyond simply calculating mean, median, and standard deviation, consider giving them opportunities to interpret statistics in context, compare data sets, and explain their reasoning. Those conversations are where the real learning happens.
